Written for the 2024 Emerging Composers Intensive at Hidden Valley. Performed on July 7, 2024, by Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, Violin; and Drew Petersen, piano.

What does it mean to trace our line of pedagogues and mentors that so acutely shape our lives? This piece comments on these shifting generations of composers: The first movement responds to my teacher's teacher, Leonard Bernstein; the second movement remarks on the music of my current teacher, Richard Danielpour; movement three pays homage to students of students of Bernstein.

Lightness and heaviness are often associated with piano and forte dynamics, but emotions, too, have their weight. James Joyce paints a beautiful image of the flux between the most arduous and brilliant emotions we are capable of experiencing, and a choir is uniquely poised as a group to express these wild shifts of weight. To be able to create a piano dynamic amidst a group of so many is almost like a metaphor for the human spirit itself: we can feel lightness no matter how weighed down the soul may be — and James Joyce only pleads alongside us.
